After the smoke clears: Why is FairPoint sending our jobs to Canada?

When FairPoint Communications bought Verizon's landlines in Northern New England, it made commitments to the citizen's of all three northern New England states to improve our service, add jobs and increase access to high speed internet.

FairPoint is sponsoring tonight's game. But it has a lot of nerve touting its commitment to New England. Even as FairPoint boasts about adding jobs in Maine, it's actually taking away the good jobs that we already have.

During the "cutover" period from Verizon, our unions allowed the company increased flexibility to help staff operations. That included FairPoint temporarily using a subcontractor to outsource about 60 positions to Canada to help our largest customers.
Now that the cutover is complete, our work is supposed to return to the Portland office.
Last week, FairPoint management reported that it intended to continue to outsource the 60 jobs to Canada.

To add insult to injury, management says that as of July 31, it intends to permanently outsource an additional 40 Service Rep jobs from Portland to the same vendor in Canada!

That's a loss of 100 good jobs that our communities need.

Similarly, FairPoint has taken Collections Department jobs promised for Littleton, NH and South Burlington, VT and given them to out-of-the-region subcontractors.

Call Gov. Baldacci's office at 207-287-3531. Tell him, "In this economy, good telephone jobs are important for economic growth. Hiring local people will ensure higher quality service. FairPoint promised these jobs to Maine. Don't let FairPoint off the hook!"
